Do you think saunas and hot baths are comfortable? They can harm male fertility
Saunas and hot baths, while relaxing, can pose risks to male fertility. Studies show that repeated exposure to heat can impair sperm production, motility, and quality due to elevated scrotal temperatures. Read on to learn expert advice for alternative options.

In recent years, health trends such as saunas and hot baths have gained popularity for their relaxation and therapeutic benefits. However, concerns have emerged over their effects on male fertility. Scientific studies show that prolonged or continuous exposure to high temperatures from these activities can have adverse effects on sperm quality and reproductive health.
Male fertility depends primarily on sperm production and quality, which is sensitive to temperature. High temperatures from saunas, hot tubs or baths can disrupt this balance, potentially impairing sperm count, motility and overall quality.
Research shows that frequent use of saunas or hot tubs can increase the temperature of the scrotum, temporarily reducing sperm production and motility. Although occasional exposure may not cause permanent fertility problems, men actively planning to conceive are advised to limit such activities.
Dr. Rajeev Aggarwal, fertility expert and co-founder of Dame Health, explains that heat exposure, especially hot tubs, saunas or prolonged hot baths, can negatively affect sperm production. Scrotal overheating can cause:
– Disrupting the function of the testicles,
– Temporarily reducing sperm count and motility.
Effect of sauna and hot bath/tub on male fertility
Dr. Agarwal explains that saunas, which expose the body to high temperatures in a dry, closed environment, can effectively increase core body temperature. Regular use of sauna can cause a significant increase in scrotal temperature, which can impair sperm production. Studies have also found that men who frequently use saunas have a higher risk of reduced sperm concentration and motility than men who avoid heat exposure.
Similarly, hot baths/tubs can also increase body temperature. “Although a single exposure to a hot shower/tub will not cause permanent fertility problems, repeated or prolonged exposure may be more effective. If a man is planning to conceive then opt for lukewarm water instead, as it helps reduce the risk of overheating of the scrotum,” said Dr Aggarwal.
Expert Recommendations for Men Concerned About Fertility
For those who are actively trying to conceive, it is advisable to choose alternative options. Dr. Aggarwal shares some tips:
1. Limit use of saunas and hot baths/tubs: It is important to limit use of saunas and hot baths/tubs; This helps maintain the optimal temperature of the scrotum.
2. Take a break: If repeatedly exposed to heat therapy for rest or muscle recovery, take frequent breaks and allow the body to cool down. Take breaks or avoid using laptops on the lap as they are also known to increase scrotum temperature significantly.
3. Maintain a healthy lifestyle: Eat a balanced diet, exercise regularly, regulate sleep-wake cycles, drink enough water, and avoid smoking or excessive alcohol consumption, as these can support overall reproductive health.
4. Complement: Taking supplements for fertility has become a trend, but choosing the right one is all that matters. Supplements like Opti Men by Dame Health may help increase fertility by regulating testosterone levels, reducing DNA damage, and improving sperm quality.
