Dimasa Hasao hill is at a short distance from Guwahati. It is home to one of the oldest inhabitants of North East India – the Dimasa tribe.
Jatinga Valley is a unique village in Dimasa Hasao district. This is one of those places where unexplained phenomena and mysteries emerge every year at the end of the monsoon. Every year between September to November, from 7 pm to 10 pm, a unique phenomenon occurs – the mysterious suicide of migratory birds.
The district, with a population of just 25,000 people, can be reached by rail travel – considered one of the scariest routes in the world.
During specified months, when the air is hazy and cloudy, various species of birds including Tiger Bittern, Kingfisher and Little Egret are affected by this unexplained phenomenon. In particular, the black drone, green pigeon, hill partridge and emerald pigeon migrate to Jatinga, but inexplicably die out.
Many theories have been put forward to find out what caused this unfortunate incident. Many studies believe that the increase in bird deaths during September to November is due to flooding of water bodies in Assam, which has disrupted the natural habitat of birds. Other theories suggest that a combination of high altitude, winds and fog disorientate the birds – causing them to fall.
One theory is that the climate of the area changes the magnetic properties of groundwater.
This incident is also associated with several local superstitions. One of the stories attributes the mysterious bird’s suicide to evil spirits. However, efforts by ornithologists and conservationists have been successful in dispelling these beliefs.
