According to experts, this has a major unpleasant side effect, as the density of your hair may decrease. Animal studies conducted on rats performing intermittent fasting showed that they had better metabolic health, but their hair growth was slower than rats fed around the clock.
Intermittent fasting follows an eating pattern in which you cycle between periods of eating and periods of fasting.
Scientists from China’s Zestlake University said they have found similar results in humans. ā€œWe don’t want to scare people away from intermittent fasting because it is associated with many beneficial effects — it’s just important to be aware that it may have some unintended effects,ā€ said senior study author and stem cell researcher Bhing Zhang. How does intermittent fasting cause hair loss?

Studies have shown that intermittent fasting improves the function of stem cells in the blood, intestines, and muscle tissue and their ability to regenerate. The research team wanted to know what effect the fasting plan had on skin and hair cells. They asked the rats to follow a daily feeding schedule that allowed only eight hours of feeding, with a 16-hour fast or an alternate-day feeding plan.
Mice on both intermittent fasting programs had only partial hair growth after about 100 days, while those that had unlimited access to food had most of their hair regrow after a month — a finding that surprised the researchers.
The team determined that fasting selectively eliminates activated hair follicle stem cells (HFSCs). Hair growth depends on the activation of these cells. Scientists said intermittent fasting forces the body to use stored fat as its primary energy source instead of readily available sugar from food.
