When you think of beaches, golden sand and turquoise waters probably come to your mind, right? But there are still some beaches that are dramatically black! They’re rare, they’re stunning, and they come with some fascinating science about their colors. That’s why some beaches are confidently painted black.
why are black sand beach made
There may be two reasons why black sand beaches exist; The most famous volcano is!
Most black sand beaches owe their existence to fiery volcanoes. When the lava meets the ocean, it cools so fast that it practically bursts into small pieces. Over time, waves and currents deposit this basalt sand along the shoreline, creating black sand beaches.
A good example of such beaches is Vik Beach in Iceland, famous for its jet-black sand and basalt rock formations; This beach is located near Katla Volcano. Another worthy contender for world’s most beautiful black beach Hawaii’s Punaluau Beach was formed by lava flowing into the ocean from the nearby Kilauea Volcano.
In some cases, black sand beaches are formed by the gradual erosion of deep sedimentary or metamorphic rocks/black volcanic rocks by rivers, which then carry the black sand particles into the sea. Waves continuously break these rocks into fine particles, creating a black coastline. Black sand can also be the result of high concentrations of heavy, dark minerals such as magnetite, hematite, and garnet. These minerals are eroded from igneous and metamorphic rocks inland and carried by rivers to the coast. Unlike volcanic sand, mineral sand is heavier and denser.
