Koh Phan Gan, home to the epic Full Moon Party held every month, is known for its lively atmosphere. It attracts thousands of people from all over the world. However, in recent years, the place has undergone considerable change – severely affecting the water and beaches.
A recent video shared by travel content creator, Grant Barnes, described the water as “dirty” and advised people not to jump in the water “even if it looks really nice.” This is because drunk tourists have been found defecating and urinating in the water in the open. This revelation came after local news reports highlighted the issue.
It has been observed that the Tourism Board is not adequately equipped to handle the sewage system. Sewage discharge significantly affects water quality. This has also impacted marine ecosystems – including coral degradation.
This video has gone viral since it was uploaded.
For those who don’t know, the first Full Moon Party took place in 1985 at Paradise Bungalow on Koh Pha Ngan Island. This was done to thank the 30 passengers. It has since gained fame and now around 30,000 tourists gather every full moon night to party on Pha Ngan Island.
This dance music festival takes place on the beautiful Haad Rin Nok beach. The party continues all night until the sun rises the next day.
