Doctors and scientists have developed a game-changing AI tool – which can predict people at risk of the condition – 13 years before it was developed, reports reveal. This technology analyzes electrocardiogram (ECG) readings during a routine heart scan. With this, it can detect subtle changes that are usually too small to be seen by the human eye.

According to The Guardian, the NHS will begin trialling the tool in 2025 at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. This will be the first healthcare system in the world to do so.

Speaking to The Guardian, Dr Libor Pastrika, Clinical Research Training Fellow at Imperial, said: “AI has huge potential to transform care in ways that can significantly improve health. AI to unlock insights hidden within ECG data “By using this, Aire-DM could be revolutionary in identifying future risk of type 2 diabetes early.” It was further said that this would be a cheap, accessible, non-invasive way to quickly predict the risk of type 2 diabetes.

Additionally, the device can also identify longer electrical activation times and even differences in the way the heart resets its electrical signals. Although these changes may seem minor, they are very important in determining the effects of diabetes on heart structure and function.
