HMPV Virus Signs and Symptoms: China is facing another epidemic like situation human metapneumovirus (HMPV) which has led to overcrowding in hospitals and crematoriums. The video that surfaced on social media platforms has taken the internet by storm and created quite a stir. According to media reports, multiple viruses, including influenza A, HMPV, Mycoplasma pneumoniae and COVID-19, are spreading simultaneously. Sources say China has declared a state of emergency due to the outbreak, although officials have not confirmed this.
With the spread of the hMPV virus, a common question arises – what signs and symptoms should one pay attention to and who is at risk? Since the internet is filled with so much information and misinformation, we reached out to health experts to explain the symptoms we need to pay attention to to keep our health in check.
On December 27, China’s disease control authority announced it was tracking cases of pneumonia of unknown origin, with respiratory illnesses expected to increase during the winter. He shared data showing an increase in respiratory infections between December 16 and 22. Health officials in China have confirmed that a virus is spreading in northern parts of the country, with the northern region being the most affected.
HMPV Virus Signs and Symptoms
Dr Kuldeep Kumar Grover, Head of Critical Care and Pulmonology, CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram, explains that the HMPV virus resembles other respiratory infections. Symptoms such as:
– cough,
– Fever,
– nasal discharge, and
– Sore throat has been seen in affected patients.
Some people experience difficulty breathing, wheezing and chest pain. Some symptoms may be apparent only in infants or older individuals and may lead to complications of pneumonia or bronchitis.
Who is at risk for HMPV virus?
Dr. Grover explains that human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus that affects people of all ages; However, it is more complicated for young children, elderly patients, and others with weakened immunity. The way it spreads is similar to the common cold or flu, through coughing, sneezing and touching contaminated surfaces.
“People with previous illnesses, particularly respiratory problems including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), may experience triggering by HMPV, so it should be taken specifically by people in those categories, but again is also a new virus, and to reduce its virulence, vigilance is the key, said Dr Suleman Ladhani, pulmonologist at Wockhardt Hospital, Mumbai Central.
Precautionary measures for pregnant women HMPV may pose significant risks during pregnancy, potentially leading to preterm birth and reduced gestational age. Dr. Ladhani explains that for newborns, this is especially worrisome because it can cause serious respiratory problems, including pneumonia, and increase the risk of respiratory failure. Preventive measures such as good hand hygiene, avoiding contact with sick patients and maintaining overall respiratory health are essential. If symptoms occur, prompt medical evaluation is important.
Should India be worried?
Currently, cases of hMPV have been reported only in China, with no cases reported in India or other countries. The severity of the virus in China is unclear, but it is recommended to follow basic precautions to prevent infection.
