Due to the ongoing protests in Nepal, many airlines have stopped flights to the Everest region. Local people of the area are protesting against the environmental damage and economic loss caused by tourism. In fact, many of these people have expressed anger at the increasing use of helicopters to ease transportation for tourists and mountaineering teams.
Not many people know but these helicopters are an essential means of transportation in remote areas of Nepal. However, now, their excessive use of tourist airlifts – including at Everest Base Camp – has sparked controversy.
For those who can afford the hefty fares, these helicopters can offer a quick one-day trip to Everest Base Camp – bypassing the two-week-long journey. Although this appears to be a convenient option, it has endangered many livelihoods that are completely dependent on these trekkers for many services.
In protest, locals have set up flag blockades at major landing sites and have also issued threats against pilots attempting to land in the area.
According to reports, the Everest region sees around 15 helicopter flights per day in winter. However, during peak tourist season this number can easily reach 60 per day.
