These two diagnostic tests tell if you have caught hMPV infection
It seems like everyone knows someone who has been dealing with cold and flu symptoms recently. But how do you differentiate between regular flu, COVID-19 or HMPV? Specific tests can help you identify the exact cause.

hmpv virus
Human metapneumovirus (hmpv) has come into limelight after the increase in cases in China, it has also been confirmed in India. Indian officials are keeping a close watch and advising the public to remain calm. Experts emphasize that HMPV is not a new virus and mainly affects people with weakened immunity, showing flu-like symptoms. If you’re experiencing HMPV-like symptoms, it’s important to know how to get diagnosed. Here’s what doctors suggest.
Don’t ignore the symptoms
Symptoms like cold, cough, fever, blocked nose and difficulty in breathing should not be ignored. Although these signs match many respiratory conditions, timely testing can help you make informed decisions.
diagnostic test for hmpv
HMPV is a respiratory virus that requires specific laboratory testing for confirmation. Dr. Gitanjali Gupta, Director of Technical Operations and Quality Assurance at Radcliffe Labs, shares the two most reliable diagnostic methods:
1. RT-PCR (Reverse Transcription-Polymerase Chain Reaction)
This is the gold standard for detecting hMPV. RT-PCR works by amplifying RNA sequences from respiratory samples, providing highly accurate and sensitive results. Dr. Gitanjali Gupta, Director of Technical Operations and Quality Assurance at Radcliffe Labs, emphasizes that RT-PCR is one of the most reliable methods of diagnosing hMPV, enabling timely recovery measures.
2. Antigen test
Antigen tests detect viral proteins in the sample, providing a rapid diagnostic option. However, this method is less effective than PCR in identifying early or mild infections, making it a secondary option.
Alternative Testing Options
In rare cases, healthcare providers may opt for viral culture testing, where a respiratory specimen is grown in a laboratory to identify hMPV. While accurate, this method is time consuming and less commonly used.
Dr. Shelley (Mittal) Mahajan, Lab Director and Clinical Lead at Mahajan Imaging Labs, advises that in addition to these tests, comprehensive blood panels can help identify complications. Imaging such as a chest X-ray or CT scan may also be recommended to assess respiratory involvement.
stay informed, stay safe
Early intervention and preventive care is the best way to deal with HMPV. Stay connected to trusted sources for updates and follow public health guidelines. By being proactive and alert, we can reduce the impact of the virus and protect ourselves and those around us.
