Tip 1: Drink it at the right time

To avoid cutting into total sleep time, the best time to drink coffee (107 mg per 250 mL) is at least 8.8 hours before bedtime and a standard dose of a pre-workout supplement (217.5 mg) should be taken at least 13.2 hours before bedtime, Shah says. A study published in Nature and Science of Sleep states that drinking coffee later in the day can make it harder to fall asleep. If you’re looking for a mid-morning beverage, drinking coffee between 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. may be optimal for most people. “By this time, your body’s natural cortisol levels (a hormone related to alertness) start to decline, so a cup of coffee can help boost your energy and focus,” Shah says.

Tip 2: Choose black coffee or plant-based milk

Black coffee is usually the healthiest option due to its low calorie content and lack of added sugar or fat. “This maximizes the benefits of coffee’s antioxidants without the extra calories,” Shah explains. However, if you prefer coffee with milk or cold coffee, choose low-fat or plant-based milk options and be wary of added sugar and high-calorie creamers. A study published in the Journal of Food Science and Technology showed that plant-based milk has significantly fewer calories than cow’s milk. The presence of sugar in cow’s milk was much higher than in plant-based milk.

Tip 3: Choose hot coffee over cold coffee
