This high altitude desert remains inaccessible for most of the year due to heavy snowfall and dangerous road conditions. Recently, a cloudburst in Chincham village of the district caused flooding and five vehicles were swept away in the cloudburst. Authorities have issued travel advisories, asking tourists to avoid the region, where rising water levels of rivers and streams in various areas are posing great risks.

Shimla, Mandi and Kullu, Himachal Pradesh

Several people are still missing after the cloudburst in Mandi, Shimla and Kullu districts, and more rain is expected in the region. The Kullu-Manali highway, which was washed away in a cloudburst incident on August 1, has been partially restored, allowing one-way traffic movement on Sunday.

KedarnathUttarakhand

Eight people have died due to heavy rains in Uttarakhand, while about six people have been injured. Apart from many roads being washed away, Taptkund, where devotees take bath, has also been ruined after being buried under debris. Kedarnath Yatra has been stopped after the road was washed away due to heavy rains. According to reports, about 20 to 30 meters of road has been washed away between Bhimavali and Rambada. At the same time, about 100 meters of road has been washed away in the flood near Sonprayag. The Indian Air Force (IAF) is actively engaged in rescue operations and so far 94 people have been rescued from Kedarnath.

A massive landslide triggered by torrential rains swept away homes in Kerala’s Wayanad district last week, killing hundreds and injuring dozens who were admitted to regional hospitals. The landslide is the worst disaster to hit Kerala since 2018, when massive floods killed over 350 people. The state government has requested travellers not to indulge in ‘dark tourism’ and hamper rescue efforts by visiting the area.
