First, we saw Egyptian fencer Nada Hafez making headlines for participating in the Games despite being seven months pregnant. Then comes Simone Biles, who knows what it’s like to be under pressure, but despite that, she managed to overcome all the odds! Several other names like Youssef Dikek and Noah Lyles have also come forward to set an example for future generations and inspire many in today’s generation.
The journey of Nada Hafiz
Nada Hafez, a 26-year-old fencer from Egypt, recently competed in her third fencing competition. Olympics While being seven months pregnant, Hafez, who lives in Cairo, shared her unique experience on Instagram, saying, “You could see two players on the podium, but actually it was three! Me, my opponent and my unborn baby!”
Reflecting on the challenges she faced during her pregnancy, Hafeez wrote, “My baby and I had many challenges, be it physical or emotional. The ups and downs of pregnancy are tough in itself, but the struggle to maintain a balance between life and sport was extremely difficult, however, it was worth the struggle. I am writing this post to say that I am proud to have secured my place in the Round of 16!”
Hafeez won her first match in the women’s individual fencing event against Elizabeth Tartakovsky of the USA 15-13. She then faced Jeon Hyoung of South Korea in the Round of 16 but was eliminated.
Many professional athletes competing in the Olympics are also parents and are juggling being parents with a professional sports career. Female athletes are breaking many stigmas associated with societal gender norms.
Simone Biles overcame mental illness Health Stigma
Simone Biles is another woman who has shown that even with poor mental health you can win the battle. During the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, she experienced the twisties. This is when your brain stops communicating with your body. This disconnect caused her to miss her vault performance and stumble during the balance beam dismount. This led to her withdrawing from competing for the rest of the Olympics.
Citing mental health issues, Biles said she needed to focus on herself. Little did the gymnast know that she had changed the definition of failure for women everywhere, but especially for women with mental illness. Biles has often spoken at length about the pressure to appear fine during the Games. Like Biles, many have survived trauma but pretend to be fine in order to meet what is expected of them.
