1. Dark Circles: A Reflection of Poor Liver Detoxification
If the dark circles under your eyes are not going away despite getting enough sleep, your liver may be responsible for it. “The liver plays an important role in detoxifying the body. When its function is compromised, toxins build up, leading to fatigue and poor blood circulation, which can appear as dark circles,” explains Dr Padhan.
2. Redness on the cheeks: A hormonal clue
Unusual redness on your cheeks may not be just blush. “This redness may be caused by increased estrogen levels due to abnormal liver function,” says Dr. Padhan. This is a common feature in individuals with alcoholic fatty liver disease.”
3. Hard Patches: Itchy, Dry Skin
Have you noticed dry or itchy spots on your face? “This may result from accumulation of bile salts under the skin or inadequate secretion of essential nutrients due to liver dysfunction,” says Dr. Padhan. These patches aren’t just a cosmetic concern — they’re signs that your liver may need attention.
4. Jaundice: Yellow Alert
Yellowing of the skin or eyes is one of the most recognizable symptoms of liver problems. “This is caused by a build-up of bilirubin, which is a waste product processed by the liver,” explains Dr. Padhan. Jaundice often points to conditions such as fatty liver or other liver diseases.
5. Swelling on face: fluid retention
Facial swelling is another sign of serious liver problems. “When the liver struggles to regulate fluid balance, fluid retention can lead to swelling or inflammation, especially in the face,” says Dr. Padhan. This symptom often appears in advanced stages of liver dysfunction.
6. Acne: More than just a skin problem
Breakouts, especially around the jaw and cheeks, may have more to do with your liver than your skin care routine. “Hormonal imbalances caused by a poorly functioning liver as well as a build-up of toxins can lead to acne,” explains Dr. Padhan.
7. Pale skin: a dull warning
Yellow or dull color can also be a sign of fatty liver. “Detoxification and metabolism are vital functions of the liver, and when the liver fails to function efficiently, the skin can lose its natural glow,” says Dr. Padhan.
when to seek help
According to Dr. Padhan, such changes on the face are often accompanied by symptoms like stomach discomfort, fatigue or weakness. “If you notice these signs, consult a health care professional immediately. “Early diagnosis and lifestyle changes, including a balanced diet and regular exercise, can prevent complications,” he advises.
