The Information Technology (IT) sector is a major pillar of India’s economy, which employs more than 5.4 million professionals. However, the nature of IT jobs includes prolonged sitting, high work -related stress, irregular sleep cycle and poor dietary habits, now contributing to a significant health crisis: metabolic laxity fatty liver disease (mafld). A recent study found that 84 percent of IT employees in India are affected by this situation.

Study reveals shocking number

A major study conducted by scientists at the University of Hyderabad, Prof. Kalyankar Mahadev and Prof. Under the leadership of CT Anitha, with research scholars, Mr. Bharram Bhargava and Ms. Nandita Pramod, Senior Hepatologist Dr. Including PN Rao and the Asian Institute of Gastrology.

According to their findings, 84 percent of IT professionals have mafld, a condition where more than 5% of liver weight is fat. If left uncontrolled, it can lead to serious complications, including liver cirrhosis, liver cancer, and liver implants require.

Why are there high risk employees? The study shows many behavior and metabolic risk factors that contribute to the high phenomenon of fatty liver disease among IT workers. This includes:
    Motionless lifestyle: Long -term sitting reduces calorie burn and increases fat accumulation.
  • Unhealthy diet: High-calorie foods, processed foods, and sugar-sweet beverages contribute to fat buildups in the liver.
  • Lack of physical activity: Limited movement leads to poor metabolism and high fat retention.
  • Work stress and lack of sleep: chronic stress and irregular sleep patterns affect liver health by increasing insulin resistance.
  • Metabolic disorder: The study also found that 71 percent of its employees were obese, and 34 percent had metabolic syndrome, a group of conditions that increase the risk of fatty liver, obesity, diabetes and hypertension.
  • Fatty liver disease signs to look out

    Fatty liver disease often silences in its early stages, which means that the symptoms may not appear until the condition worsens. However, here are some warning signs that should be known:

      Unexplained fatigue
  • Abdominal
  • Inadvertent weight gain or weight loss
  • Stomach inflammation
  • Dark urine and yellow stool
  • Skin or eyes yellow (jaundice, in advanced stages)
  • How can IT employees protect their liver health

    Given the high proliferation of MAFLD in the IT workforce, experts recommend lifestyle modifications as the best preventive remedy. Here IT employees can do to reverse or prevent fatty liver disease:

    1. Increase physical activity

      At least 30–45 minutes of exercise engage daily, including walking, jogging or strength training.
  • Avoid sitting for a long time – use a standing desk, stretch or use.
  • 2. Adopt a healthy diet

      Reduce the intake of processed foods, sugary drinks and sophisticated carbs.
  • Include fiber -rich foods such as vegetables, fruits and whole grains.
  • Choose lean protein like fish, chicken, tofu and legumes.
  • 3. Manage stress and sleep

      Prefer the quality of 7-8 hours every night.
  • Practice stress-management techniques such as yoga, meditation, or deep breathing practice.
  • 4. Regular health screening

      Routine liver function tests and ultrasound scans can help detect fatty liver disease.
  • Monitor blood sugar levels, cholesterol and blood pressure to prevent metabolic disorders.
  • The findings of the study urge both employees and companies to take active steps to address lifestyle -related health risks.
