The dark side of the positivity of the body: when self-love becomes a source of stress
The positivity movement of the body promotes self-acceptance but can inspire stress, crime and unrealistic expectations. A balanced approach, like the neutrality of the body, encourages respect without forced positivity.

The body’s positivity movement is to promote self-acceptance and challenge unrealistic beauty expectations. While its intentions are positive, there is an emerging debate about the ability that the body’s positivity has a negative effect. For some, the pressure to be positive about their body can always be stressful and can inspire feelings of crime and stress rather than confidence and self-acceptance.
Always positive pressure
One of the biggest issues with the positivity of the body is always pressure to love and accept someone’s body. Although self-acceptance is helpful, it is not always realistic for everyone for an ideal body image. Humans naturally swing in their bodies sometimes amidst confidence, and they need to be constantly positive, which may come continuously.
When people are not able to achieve a high standard of infallible self-acceptance, they may feel that they are failing themselves in the body’s positivity and feel disappointed and guilty.
Toxic positivity in body image movement
Toxic positivity is the concept that even when experiencing real negative emotions, one must always be optimistic. In the image of the body, it can motivate individuals to suppress their insecurity rather than working in a healthy way. Instead of creating a place for second-orbits and doubt, toxic positivity can prevent individuals from accepting that they are struggling to separate them with negative emotions.
Comparison net
The irony is that the positivity of the body works to strengthen comparison. Social media is filled with affected by affecting self-love and confidence, but it still works to create another unattainable benchmark. If someone is already struggling with the issues of the body image and others are seen to accept every part of their own, then one can feel inferior. This comparison can increase the feelings of doubt rather than bringing comfort and empowerment that provides movement.
A more balanced approach
Instead of the need for continuous positivity, the neutrality of the body is a better option. The neutrality of the body is accepting and respecting the body without liking everything about it. This way of thinking always reduces stress of being positive about appearance and makes praise for what the body is capable of doing instead and not necessarily how it looks.
