After the temperature rises during the summer months, children are particularly weak for the harmful effects of excessive heat. Unlike adults, young children have difficult times in regulating their body temperature, making them more prone to heat related diseases. “Excessive heat can take a serious toll on a child’s body and brain,” Dr. Siddharth Madbhushi, Advisor Neonateologist and Pediatrician, Ankura Hospital, Pune for women and children has warned. “It can lead to headache, dizziness, irritability and severe cases, heatstroke or even seizures.” The risk of the sun can be dangerous for a long time without proper hydration, which affects both their physical and mental welfare.
While in summer, external fun, holidays and time to play, it also hosts health risks for children. Excessive heat, sweating, low water intake, and exposure to germs make children susceptible to seasonal diseases. “Children’s immune system is still developing, making them less capable of fighting infections that can easily overcome adults,” Dr. Madbhushi tells. Increased external activities, crowded summer camps, swimming in public pools, and eating street food increase the chances of all diseases. Parents need to be cautious for early signs of trouble and work quickly.

4 common summer diseases in children

1. Food poisoning:

Eating polluted food or drinking water can easily cause food poisoning in children during summer. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain and fever. “Food is rapidly spoiled in summer, the risk of food -borne diseases increases,” Dr. Madbhushi says. “Always make sure that children eat fresh, properly cooked food and avoid food from incredible sources.”

2. Dehydration:

Children often forget to drink enough water while playing, causing dehydration. Common signs are dried lips, low urination, fatigue and dizziness. “Parents should constantly offer fluid, even if the children claim that they are not thirsty,” Dr. Madbhushi advises. Including hydrating fruits such as watermelon, cucumber and oranges can also help.

3. Urinary tract infection (UTI):

Dehydration and poor hygiene can give rise to UTI, especially in summer heat. “Painful urination, constantly urges to urinate, and fever is a warning signs,” he notes. Teaching children of proper hygiene and ensuring regular water consumption are important preventive steps.

4. Eye infection (conjunctivitis):

Swimming in the contaminated pool or touching your eyes with dirty hands can cause infections such as conjunctivitis. Symptoms include redness, itching, water discharge and light sensitivity. “Use protective glasses while swimming and encourage regular hand washing,” Dr. Recommend Madbhushi.

Precautionary measures to keep children safe

  • Stay hydrated: “Children often drink fluids to prevent dehydration,” Dr. Emphasize Madbhushi. Offer water, coconut water, lemon water and fresh juice throughout the day.
  • Dress light: Choose light colored, respiratory clothes to help the body stay cool.
  • Sun protection: Apply a pediatrician-innocent sunscreen and limit external activities to cooler hours.
  • Safe eating habits: Stop from home -made food and avoid street food and contaminated water.
  • Good hygiene: Teach children often to wash their hands and maintain personal hygiene, especially after playing outdoor.
  • Prompt Medical attention: “If your child shows signs of any disease, do not delay in consulting a pediatrician,” Dr. He urges Madbuhi.
