A 12th-century stepwell Nagpur‘S Ramtek Temple This complex is a lesser-known historical site in the city that has a unique legend associated with it. While stepwells were a common feature in India, serving as a source of water for both regular consumption and irrigation, this stepwell is believed to have kept the water level constant ever since its construction.
Karpur means camphor and baoli means water tank. This stepwell got its name because of the camphor-like fragrance of the water, which is believed to have medicinal properties. Today, this dilapidated structure is located at the foot of some small hills inside the forest. The stepwell is dedicated to six goddesses: Chamunda, Bhairavi, Ingalaj, Kali, Ranachandi and Kapurta. In fact, a temple dedicated to Goddess Kali is located on the edge of the stepwell. There is a pillared corridor on three sides, which houses a partially dilapidated sanctum, which once housed a deity.
Probably built by the Yadava dynasty in the 10th-12th century, this stepwell is today a serene place, about 1 km from Shri Shantanatha Digambar Jain Temple Ramtek.

While visiting the stepwell itself can take about an hour, you can also trek up to the medieval Ramtek Fort, which is perched atop a hill and offers panoramic views. Then there is Khindsi Lake, a calm water body surrounded by greenery, perfect for boating and picnics. For a dose of spirituality, the town of Mansar, about 30 km from Ramtek, has ancient temples like the Mansar Devi Temple and the Laxmi Narayan Temple, which have incredible, intricate architecture worth visiting.
Those seeking a deeper connection to India’s heritage can visit the Sevagram Ashram, a center of the Indian independence movement, or Deekshabhoomi, an important Buddhist site. 60 kilometers from the city will take you to the Adasa Ganapati Temple, which reflects the rich artistic heritage of the region.
