  • The internet is full of videos of bizarre street food.
  • This video shows making unusual yam pakoda.
  • The audience is not liking the idea of turning yam into pakodas.

India has an abundance of vegetables that play an important role in the country’s diverse culinary landscape. Among these, the one known as yam holds a special place in the hearts of many people. Purple yam, in particular, is known not only for its distinctive color but also for its unique flavor profile. Often prepared as a side dish mashed with a touch of ghee, purple yam offers a comforting and earthy sweetness. Additionally, it finds its way into both sweet and savory preparations, such as Ratalu Kheer and Purple Ratalu Sabzi. Now, a video showing a street vendor in Surat selling yam pakodas has caught the attention of food lovers online.

In the footage now going viral, the seller cuts purple yam into thin chip-like slices and wraps them in a mixture of gram flour (besan) with added spices, and deep-fries them in hot oil. After hot frying, he stirs them with a strainer and takes out crispy purple yam dumplings – ready to serve! These pakodas are available in retail for Rs 80.

Well, the audience was not impressed. One user said, “How to make a healthy vegetable unhealthy.”

Another user wrote, “They make pakodas with everything these days.”

Some raised concerns about “hygiene” and “repeated use of the same oil”.

“Be like oil. At least leave me now,” read one comment.

Purple yam brings both color and health benefits. Rich in complex carbs, fiber and essential vitamins, they provide sustained energy and aid digestion. These yams are rich in antioxidants like anthocyanins, which are known to have anti-inflammatory properties. They also provide minerals like potassium for heart health and vitamin C for a strong immune system. Apart from their vibrant appearance, adding purple yam to your diet not only adds color but also provides a nutritional boost to your overall health.

Purple yam also opens up a world of culinary possibilities! One such delightful creation is Ratlu Puri. Check out the recipe here.
