Navratri, a vibrant festival, holds great importance in Hindu culture. The word Navratri means nine nights in Sanskrit, and the festival is dedicated to the worship of the Hindu goddess Durga and her various forms. While Navratri is commonly associated with Hinduism and is celebrated on a large scale in India, the festival is also celebrated in many other countries – with unique cultural flavors and traditions.
According to Hindu calendar, Pratipada Tithi of Shukla Paksha in Ashwin month will start at 12:19 AM on 3rd October 2024 and will continue till 2:58 AM on 4th October. Based on Udaya Tithi prevalent at the time of sunrise), Shardiya Navratri will begin on Thursday, October 3, 2024.

India

Navratri is celebrated with great enthusiasm in different parts of India. Each region displays different customs and traditions. In Gujarat, Navratri is synonymous with colorful and energetic Garba and Dandiya Raas dance. People wear traditional attire and dance openly. This festival is celebrated by observing fasting, prayers in other parts of the country.

United States of America

In America, Navratri is celebrated mostly by Indian immigrants. Many community centers and temples organize Garba and Dandiya Raas events, bringing together people of Indian origin to celebrate their culture and heritage.

In Britain, Navratri is celebrated with great enthusiasm in cities like London, Leicester and Birmingham. Various cultural groups organize programs and Garba parties. These events serve as an opportunity to promote cultural exchange.

Nepal

In Nepal, Navratri is called Dashain. It is one of the most important festivals of the year and lasts for 15 days. During this time people worship various forms of Goddess Druga. One of the main attractions here is the ā€œJamaraā€ ritual. As a part of this, barley seeds are sown in small pots. Once these sprout, they are considered auspicious and are exchanged between families.

Australia

People from the Indian community come together and celebrate the festival with great enthusiasm. Many Dandiya Raas programs are organized by cultural groups. The venues are decorated with colorful decorations, live music, creating a festive atmosphere.
