Meet Shreyovi Mehta, a 10-year-old photographer with an award-winning passion for wildlife

Shreyovvi is the youngest Indian winner of the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year award

From the age of two, shreyovi mehta Has gone on countless trips to the forests and national parks of India with her parents, spending 30 to 40 days in the jungle every year. At the age of 10, his love for wildlife made him one of the greatest wildlife photography Awards in the world. His spectacular performance of capturing two Indian peacocks against the misty backdrop of Keoladeo National Park in Bharatpur earned him the title of runner-up in the BBC’s 10 years and under category. Wildlife Photographer of the Year award. His photograph speaks volumes about his talent, patience and deep connection with nature. But what makes his story even more remarkable is how his journey into photography has been shaped by his parents – both ardent wildlife enthusiasts.

Her father Shivang is a professional wildlife photographer while her mother Kahini runs a wildlife travel company Nature Wanderers. On what she feels about her achievement, Kahini said, “She started taking photographs with a point and shoot camera when she was just 4 years old. Then again she was always fascinated by Shivang’s instruments. She wanted to handle bigger lenses. We noticed that his natural camera holding technique was good and by the age of 6 he started using our back up camera. He is fond of traveling outdoors and we encourage that interest. We would be happy if she enters the field of wildlife and we can guide her through this career. But it is his choice and we will not put this pressure on him.
On the sidelines of the awards ceremony in London, we spoke to the young wildlife photographer about what was behind his winning shot, his favorite wildlife spots and his enduring love for the tiger.

What was your initial reaction when you found out that you were the runner-up in such a prestigious competition?

To be honest, I didn’t know about the contest, but when dad and mom saw the image I captured in Bharatpur, they were impressed, and they sent that image to the contest. I am very glad that the jury liked my photograph, especially because the photograph depicts our national bird – the peacock. This is a great moment for India, so I am happy.

Can you tell us the story behind your award-winning photo? What inspired you to capture that moment?

In November 2023, dad and I were in Bharatpur. It was morning and while walking, father showed me a path on which there was beautiful divine light. On a winter morning, the mist in the air and the tunnel of light looked magical. And while we were admiring it, two peacocks walked and stood in the middle of the road in that light. I immediately got down on my knees, and Dad instructed me to frame the shot with the beautiful forest canopy. I was trying to do this and saddled a blue bull that came out of the bushes and stood at the edge of the frame. I liked the whole mood and just took the shot. I’m glad it came out okay.

How did your passion for wildlife photography develop at such a young age? Is there anyone who inspires you?

My parents are wildlife professionals. Dad is one of the leading men of India wildlife photographer And mom runs Nature Wanderers – one of India’s leading wildlife travel companies. So when I was 2 years old I started going to the forests. Has visited about 10 national parks of India and loves spending time in forests. Gradually I picked up dad’s extra cameras and I love seeing the forest through the camera.

What is your favorite wildlife spot and why?

I think of Bharatpur because it gives me the freedom to walk and explore the forest properly. I love walking for many kilometers with my father when he explores the bird life in Bharatpur. And I also like Bandhavgarh very much. There is something special about the liveliness of the forest. Recently, mom and dad took me on a night walk in the forest for the first time. And I saw a tiger under the gypsy headlights. It was very special to see the tiger after sunset. I always look forward to more thrilling adventures in Bandhavgarh.

What do you like more, photography or just being in the woods?

It’s always good to be in the woods. Our forests in India have always been very beautiful and each forest is very different from the other. Corbett is different from Ranthambore. Ranthambore is different from Bandhavgarh. Bandhavgarh is different from Panna… So, I like staying in the jungle, finding tigers, sleeping in gypsies during safari. But camera and photography are equally important. I’ve been using my parents’ camera bodies and lenses for a while now, and it’s very annoying when they ask for the body while watching. I guess since I’ve now been awarded the BBC I should ask for my own cameras and lenses.

Are you planning a career in photography?

I want to learn more and practice more. I have to balance my studies and photography. But everyone is supporting me – my parents, my school and my photography instructor.

How do you think photography can help raise awareness of wildlife conservation, and what role do you see yourself playing in this effort?

When we take photographs and show them to people we create awareness about a place or species. I keep sharing my experiences in the forests with my friends in school, with the hope that they too would like to experience the forests and learn more about wildlife and nature.
