Hydration: The Facts

Drinking enough water is one of the best ways to maintain kidney health. Proper hydration helps flush out toxins from the kidneys, control blood pressure, and prevent kidney stones. Studies consistently show that water consumption reduces the risk of kidney stones and improves urinary health, especially in people who are prone to stones.

Cranberry Juice: Mixed Evidence

Cranberry juice is widely recommended for urinary tract health, especially in preventing urinary tract infections (UTIs). Some studies support the role of cranberry juice in preventing bacterial infections in the urinary tract, which may reduce the burden on the kidneys. However, it may not directly improve kidney health or function, and the high sugar content in commercial cranberry juice may be a concern.

Herbal Supplements: Facts and Myths

Herbs such as nettle leaf, dandelion root, green tea and ginger are believed to support kidney health. Although these herbs may act as a mild diuretic, promoting urine production and reducing fluid buildup, there is limited research on their long-term benefits. Of greater concern is that some herbs, such as starfruit and herbs containing aristolochic acid, are toxic to the kidneys. Various organic acids and alkaloids, use of heavy metals in traditional herbal medicines (contamination during production) are involved in kidney injuries.

Thus, it is essential to consult a healthcare provider before taking any herbal supplements for kidney health.
Probiotics: The Facts
Recent studies show that gut health affects kidney function. Probiotics, which support healthy gut bacteria, may indirectly support kidney health by reducing the production of uremic toxins that the kidneys must filter.
Many natural remedies for kidney health have some scientific basis, while others are more myth than fact. Staying hydrated, eating a balanced diet, and consulting a healthcare provider before taking supplements are effective, safe ways to support kidney health. Avoid self-prescribed herbs or extreme detoxes, as these can sometimes cause more harm than good.
