Man who was dismissed as fat for 12 years, given Ozempic to lose weight, had 60-pound malignant tumor in his stomach
A Norwegian man who was considered obese for 12 years has finally had surgery for a huge tumor in his stomach that caused significant damage to his intestines and right kidney, according to doctors. Thomas Kraut, 59, was prescribed Ozempic by doctors who told him he was obese before he received a final diagnosis. Read on to know about his story.

A 59-year-old Norwegian man, who was called FAT for 12 years because of his ever-expanding belly, was diagnosed with a 60-pound malignant tumor. Thomas Kraut said he was diagnosed with obesity and was prescribed Ozempic before he was diagnosed with obesity, which required a 10-hour surgery to remove it.
Krautâs belly continued to grow larger, with doctors initially convinced that she was simply overweight. He was sent on weight loss and nutrition courses, even as the cancer was growing inside him.
Kraut, originally from Germany, moved to Norway in 2008 to work as an optician. However, he started having health problems in 2011 when his stomach started protruding. Doctors diagnosed him with type 2 diabetes and obesity in 2012. However, more than a decade later, when he was being prepared for a gastric sleeve operation to deal with his obesity, doctors realized that there was a huge malignant tumor growing inside Kraut.
âMy stomach was getting bigger and bigger. I went from one doctor to another and in 2019 I finally got approval for a gastric sleeve,â he told the New York Post. âThe doctors only talked about being overweight and diabetes. I was given Ozempic for diabetes and before the gastric sleeve I had to attend nutrition and fitness courses for several years,â he said.
Kraut said that after pressing his stomach, the doctor realized that there was no fat on the hard surface. âIt put pressure on my stomach. It was hard, Kraut said, and not soft, as is the case with fat.
âAlso, I had lost so much weight with the change in diet and Ozempic that my face and arms became very thin. Only my stomach was big. The doctor even said I was really malnourished.â The doctor ordered a CT scan and discovered that Kraut had a huge tumor.
Krautâs right kidney was affected
Kraut said the growing tumor affected the function of his right kidney, as it was pressing on the organ. âIt was a real shock to me,â Kraut admitted. âMy kidneys were affected because the tumor was affecting my right kidney.â
It took doctors two weeks to diagnose Kraut with a rare fatty tumor, which was actually composed of many small cancerous areas surrounded by fat.
Cancer tissue still growing despite tumor removal
Kraut had to undergo a 10-hour operation to remove the huge tumor, which weighed approximately 30 kilograms and was 20.59 inches (52.3 centimeters) in diameter. Doctors said it caused significant damage to his body and part of his small intestine, and that his right kidney also had to be removed, and that cancer tissue was still growing inside him.
âI go to a psychologist for treatment every two weeks. I have to see an oncologist twice a year because the tumor tissue is still growing inside me. I was told it couldnât be removed because it was attached to many organs,â he said.
