The state health department of Tamil Nadu has issued a public advisory amid a rise in viral infections, including dengue, influenza and other fever-related illnesses, amid heavy rains in several districts of the state. Chennai and its surrounding districts – Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu and Tiruvallur – are witnessing a significant increase in cases of fever, respiratory infections and viral diseases.
The health department has urged residents to take extra precautions, especially children who are more vulnerable to infection. Malaria and leptospirosis have also been reported from different parts of the state.
Officials highlighted symptoms like high fever, chills, cough, sore throat, body ache and headache. The public has been urged to seek immediate medical attention if these symptoms occur.
Health Minister Ma Subramaniam, speaking to IANS, said the department is particularly alert in ten districts; Chennai, Coimbatore, Krishnagiri, Tiruppur, Tiruvallur, Theni, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Thanjavur and Tiruchi, account for 57 per cent of dengue cases in the state.
Dr TS Selvavinayagam, director of public health and preventive medicine, stressed that the health department is tracking dengue and other fever-related cases reported by both government and private hospitals. The public has been advised not to store rainwater in unused household items as this could create a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Also, the health department recommends drinking only boiled water to prevent waterborne diseases.
Here, take a look at some tips to keep yourself safe viral diseases during rains,
maintain personal hygiene
Wash hands frequently with soap and water, especially after touching surfaces in public places. Viruses can live on surfaces and can be transferred to your body by touching your face.
avoid touching your face
Your eyes, nose and mouth are common entry points for the virus. Minimizing touching your face helps prevent viral particles on your hands from infecting you.
Use clean water and drink boiled water.
Water pollution often occurs during the rainy season. Drinking pure or boiled water reduces the risk of waterborne viral infections.
Eat home-cooked, nutritious food
Avoid street food as outside food is more likely to be contaminated during rains. A balanced diet strengthens the immune system, making it more resilient to infections.
cough and sneeze
Use a tissue or your elbow to cover your mouth and nose and this can help prevent the spread of droplets. Proper respiratory hygiene reduces the spread of airborne viruses.
get vaccinated
Keep up to date with vaccines like the flu shot that can provide immunity against some seasonal viruses. Vaccination is a powerful tool because it can reduce the severity and spread of viral diseases.
wear a mask
Masks reduce exposure to airborne viruses in crowded or poorly ventilated areas.
keep your environment clean
Stagnant water breeds mosquitoes which spread diseases like dengue. Regularly clean and disinfect living areas and use mosquito repellents to reduce risks.
