Worldwide, IVF is one of the most successful forms of reproductive procedures, resulting in more than 500,000 babies born annually. However, IVF is not the only method through which one can determine the outcome of this process. An all-round approach involving healthy eating, frequent exercise, restful sleep, and mindfulness practices can significantly increase the chances of success, creating an ideal environment for conception.
Diet and IVF Results
Dr. Umesh N Jindal, Obstetrician and Gynecologist, Director, Jindal IVF Chandigarh, says that a balanced diet is important to increase the success rate of the IVF process. Featuring fresh vegetables, fruits and whole grains with healthy fats Mediterranean style diet And has been shown to significantly affect the success rates of IVF, especially in women up to 35 years of age. According to Dr. Jindal, this diet helps keep insulin levels in check, increases the quality of eggs and provides a conducive environment for embryo implantation.
Maintaining a healthy weight is equally important, says Dr. Jindal. Being overweight can cause problems with ovulation, egg quality and pregnancy. he explains this weight loss This becomes essential for success in IVF because even modest weight loss – 5 to 10 percent – improves ovarian cycles, balances hormonal levels, and can increase fertility.
Role of exercise and sleep
Dr. Jindal says that engaging in moderate physical activity benefits those undergoing IVF because it improves their physical and mental health. He suggests activities like swimming, which is a good cardiovascular exercise that isn’t hard on the joints, or walking at a steady pace to keep the body active without overworking it. light yogaThis can prove to be very helpful as it not only provides comfort but also builds strength, which is very important during fertility treatments, says Dr Jindal. However, he cautions against high-intensity or too strenuous exercise, as it can have a negative impact on hormone balance and IVF outcomes.
Dr. Jindal also emphasizes that sleep is as important as exercise for maintaining fertility. Citing a 2013 study, he says women who sleep seven to eight hours per night have a higher chance of conceiving than women with irregular or inadequate sleep. Good sleep regulates reproductive hormones like melatonin and cortisol, he says, which are important for an effective IVF cycle. According to them, irregular sleep patterns disrupt the regulation of these hormones, making it more difficult to conceive. Ensuring consistent and restful sleep increases overall fertility and improves the chances of a positive outcome after IVF.
Effects of Alcohol and Caffeine
Dr. Umesh N Jindal explains that lifestyle factors like alcohol consumption have a great impact on fertility. He noted that a 2017 review of studies showed that alcohol consumption of more than 12.5 grams per day could prevent pregnancy, disrupt ovulation and disrupt hormonal balance. They say alcohol consumption among men is linked to lower quality sperm, low sperm count and abnormal sperm morphology.
Dr. Jindal further advises that caffeine is another risk factor, often consumed in large quantities in beverages such as coffee, tea, and energy drinks. According to them, research evidence has shown that higher intake – more than 200-300 mg per day – delays conception and increases the risk of miscarriage. For men, excessive caffeine consumption can reduce sperm quality. He recommends reducing or completely eliminating caffeine and switching to decaffeinated caffeine to help improve fertility.
