After years of battling the pandemic and adapting to the new situation lifestyleThe world’s cities have finally settled into a new normal. This is evident from the latest liveability data. Vienna, the capital of Austria, has been recognised as the most liveable city in the world for the third consecutive year. The status was announced by The Economist’s Global Liveability Index. For those who don’t know, it evaluates 173 cities on various aspects including sustainability, healthcare, culture, environment, education and infrastructure.

As with last year, four European cities made the list, as well as four Asia-Pacific cities and two Canadian cities. All cities remain the same as in 2023, except for one city, Toronto. It dropped out of the top 10 due to a drop in infrastructure score linked to the growing housing crisis. Osaka and Auckland maintained their positions, so no new cities entered the top 10.

Vienna

The city is known for its beauty, history and picturesqueness. It has now also earned a reputation for sustainability. The city has dominated the rankings nine times in the last eleven years.

Copenhagen

Copenhagen retained its position as the second most liveable city for the third year in a row. It excels in sustainability, education and infrastructure.

Zurich

Zurich moves up from sixth place to third in 2023. The city benefits from top scores in healthcare and education.

Melbourne

Melbourne may have slipped, but it still remains on top due to its strong healthcare and education services.

Calgary/Geneva

Calgary in Canada and Geneva in Switzerland retained the fifth spot. Both cities have shown resilience in many aspects.

Sydney/Vancouver

Sydney, Australia, and Vancouver, Canada, also retained their spots in the top 10. Although Sydney’s ranking has dropped, Vancouver’s housing costs have also impacted its ranking.

Osaka/Auckland

Osaka in Japan and Auckland in New Zealand also retained the rankings as these cities excel in sustainability, healthcare and education.

“The EIU’s index assesses the challenges facing an individual’s quality of life in 173 cities around the world. This year’s average score has increased slightly despite geopolitical conflicts, civil unrest and housing crises,” the official website says.
