With the advent of social media, we watch many videos and posts that advice health. The main problem here is that most of these videos are not well researched and are based on myths. However, people do not understand that they begin to follow these advice.
Now, a video that had gone viral recently claimed that peppermint sauce could immediately reduce your blood pressure. Meaning, people with high BP can consume mint chutney and they will experience immediate relief.
Times has now talked to Digital with experts to actually check whether it is true.
Pratikasha Kadam, the chief dietist, Kokilaben Dhirubhai Amabani Hospital, Navi Mumbai says, “Minta (Mint) is a highly nutritious herb with many health benefits, but assuming that eating PUDina chutney is a myth. Additional salt can actually increase blood pressure instead of reducing it.
Dr. Swaraup Swaraj Pal Senior Consultant Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeon, Glenaigars Hospitals, also hold the same opinion, as she says, “One must understand that mint chutney cannot help control your blood pressure and better than believing in home remedies.
He further said that relying on home remedies for such serious issues can worsen your situation.
What foods help in managing blood pressure?
For effective blood pressure management, a holistic approach is required. Including the following foods in your diet can help:
- Leafy greens (spinach, kel) – high in potassium, which helps to regulate BP
- Fruit (bananas, berries, oranges) – Antioxidant and rich in fiber
- Nuts and seeds (flaxseed, almonds) – Provide healthy fat and magnesium
- Helps maintaining low-fat dairy-heart health
- Garlic and beetroot-are known for their natural BP-less effects
- Whole grains – aid in maintaining a balanced diet
It is important to understand that to manage blood pressure requires a lifestyle approach of 360 degrees based on single foods. Consulting a dietist to make a personal diet plan based on your health, lifestyle and any existing conditions is the most effective way to control BP in a long time.
