The Festival of Lights is here! While Diwali is a time of celebration, unfortunately it can also cause eye problems due to the increased air pollution caused by bursting of crackers. Delhi is already covered in a layer of smog, which has increased respiratory problems across the state. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has ordered the implementation of phase two of the anti-pollution scheme GRAP to prevent further spread. Air pollution not only causes respiratory problems but can also cause eye problems including allergies and irritation as firecrackers contain toxic chemicals like barium and dioxin which can harm your eyes.
Delhi’s air contains pollutants like particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and heavy metals that can cause irritation, redness, burning, watering and even blurred vision. In rare cases, air pollution also increases the chance of developing ocular surface disease, a serious eye condition that can even result in blindness.
Despite these risks, it is possible to have a happy and safe Diwali if you keep a few things in mind while celebrating. Dr. Supriya Sriganesh, Phaco and Refractive Surgeon, Executive Director, Nethradhama Super Specialty Eye Hospital, Bengaluru, shares tips that will help protect your eyes from potential air-borne irritants that can blur your vision:
1. Maintain safe distance while bursting crackers
If you choose to burst crackers during Diwali, make sure you do it as responsibly as possible. Maintain a distance of at least five meters while watching and one arm’s distance while burning crackers. “Avoid holding the firecracker in your hand as much as possible, as this increases the risk of the smoke entering your eyes and causing immediate irritation and later complications,” says Dr Supriya.
2. Keep your hands clean
It is advisable to maintain a high level of hand hygiene during Diwali celebrations. The smoke generated by bursting firecrackers can enter your eyes, which can increase the tendency to rub the eyes vigorously. “If your hands are unclean, it can cause irritation and allergy to your eyes, making them instantly red and itchy. If not treated immediately, you may also have long-term eye problems as a result of this negligence,” she said.
3. Use eye drops
If you are among those who are prone to eye allergies, eye drops are your best friend during Diwali. Eye drops recommended by your doctor can lubricate your eyes and help maintain optimal moisture levels. In turn, this can help you avoid dry eye syndrome, a condition where your eyes don’t make enough tears to stay wet, or when your tears don’t work properly.
4. Drink plenty of water
It is very important to stay hydrated during Diwali celebrations, as they can put physical strain on every part of the body, including your eyes. Drinking adequate amounts of water is important to maintain the tear layer in your eyes, thereby reducing the chances of eye fatigue. Eye fatigue, sometimes called asthenopia or eye strain, is a condition that results from eye fatigue related to overuse.
5. Use indoor air purifier
Even if you are someone who likes to celebrate a quiet Diwali indoors, you may still be exposed to harmful airborne fumes that enter your home by penetrating the walls and windows. Air purifiers can increase the quality of air inside your home and protect you from harmful pollutants.
