  • Taste Atlas has named two popular Indian breads among the best breads in the world.

Two iconic Indian breads have topped the list of the prestigious Taste Atlas 2024-25. Of the 15,478 listed food items based on 477,287 valid ratings, Amritsari Kulcha and Butter Garlic Naan scored the highest average score in the ‘Bread’ category. Indian bread is central to the country’s culinary heritage, with diverse varieties found in every region. From naan to paranthas, these breads are an integral part of daily meals, often paired with curries, dal or vegetable dishes. Usually made from whole wheat or refined flour, they are traditionally cooked in a tandoor (clay oven) or pan. The diverse textures and flavors make Indian bread loved and appreciated globally.

Butter Garlic Naan – 3rd place in the world

This soft, pillowy flatbread is bursting with butter and garlic flavor, and it pairs perfectly with a variety of Indian curries and dals. Amritsari Kulcha – 5th place in the world

Punjab’s famous bread Amritsari Kulcha secured the fifth position in the global list with a rating of 4.65. Known for its crispy, flaky texture and delicious filling, this bread is usually made with mashed potatoes and spices, this bread is cooked in tandoor to perfect crispness. Traditionally served with chickpeas (spiced chickpeas) and a dollop of butter, Amritsari Kulcha has won a place in the hearts (and stomachs) of food lovers around the world.

While Indian bread has taken its top spot this year, other breads on the list are equally deserving of recognition. Colombia’s Pan de Bono also tops the Test Atlas rankings. This is a light, cheesy bread that is perfect for snacking. Roti Canai, a popular flatbread from Malaysia, is second due to its crunchy exterior and soft interior, which is usually paired with curry. Up next is Italy’s Pane di Altamura, a rustic, savory bread made from durum wheat flour.
