Typhoon Usagi, the fifth worst storm in three weeks, struck the Philippines on Thursday. The storm made landfall in Baggao, Cagayan province at 1:30 pm local time. This prompted mass evacuations and caused major travel disruptions for locals and tourists. This storm adds to the complications in the already affected area.
The Philippines’ national weather agency initially issued its highest typhoon alert. However, it was later downgraded as Usagi weakened slightly after landfall. However, evacuation efforts have intensified as the storm moves north. Authorities expect a total of 40,000 people to seek safety in evacuation centres.
Another powerful storm, Typhoon Man-yi, is expected to hit Manila on Sunday. Multiple travel advisories warn of extended disruptions in the coming days. Tourists are advised to remain aware of travel alerts and consider alternative destinations. Local authorities are also working to restore roadways and airports. However, recovery will take time, especially as severe storms in this hurricane-prone nation continue to challenge both residents and visitors.
Mr. Ruelli Rapsing, head of the Cagayan Disaster Relief Office, speaking to the media, said city officials were still investigating the damage caused by the typhoon. “After Mars (Typhoon Yinxing) there were more houses that were partially or completely destroyed. Right now, we are assessing the damage,” Mr Rapsingh said.
Precautionary evacuation of vulnerable residents in the path of Typhoon Man-yi will begin today.
