67-year-old man undergoes surgery to remove artificial dentures from stomach
A denture was successfully removed from the stomach of a 67-year-old man at a Delhi hospital. The patient had accidentally swallowed the denture while eating. The team of doctors assessed the case and removed the denture through multiple endoscopy procedures.
The entire procedure to remove the denture from the patient’s abdomen was completed in 15 minutes and was carried out at Fortis Hospital Vasant Kunj. The team of doctors was led by Dr Shubham Vatsya, Director of Gastroenterology and Hepatobiliary Sciences at the hospital. The denture was pushed inside the abdomen and removed from the body with the help of a Roth net. It is a device used to remove foreign objects from the body. The patient was later discharged in a stable condition the same day.
On admission, the patient complained of severe pain between the throat and chest. After examination, it was found that the denture was stuck in the patient’s stomach, and there was injury and bleeding in his food pipe and stomach area. The team of doctors carefully removed the denture and saved the patient’s life. Doctors say that any delay in diagnosis and removal of the denture could have led to many life-threatening situations and could have proved fatal.
Talking about the details of the case, Dr. Shubham Vatsya said, “The circumference of the denture was 15 cm and it was difficult to remove it due to its size. However, the procedure was performed under intravenous sedation and we removed the denture through multiple gastrointestinal endoscopy. During the procedure, the denture was pushed inside the stomach and taken out of the body with the help of a Roth net, a device used to remove foreign objects from the body. The patient was discharged the same day and is currently doing well. If the denture was not removed on time, it could have led to several life-threatening situations; such as a perforation of the stomach or intestines which could have been fatal.”
