The Karnataka government has issued a directive allowing bars, hotels, clubs and other licensed establishments to remain open till 1 am daily. The directive is dated July 29, 2024 and has been issued by the state urban development department. It pertains to establishments within the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) limits. This extension of operational timings is meant to boost the city’s nightlife. As per reports, it is also expected to boost the government’s revenue.

According to the notification, bars, clubs, hotels and restaurants in the Karnataka capital can now serve food and beverages, including liquor, till 1 am every day. For those holding CL-4 (licence for clubs), CL-6 (A) (star hotel licence), CL-7 (hotel and boarding house licence) and CL-7D (hotel and boarding house licence owned by persons belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes), the permitted operating hours are from 9 am to 1 am. Those with CL-9 (refreshment room or bar) licence can operate from 10 am to 1 am.
In February, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had mentioned the extension of operational timings (till 1 pm) during his state budget speech. He had said this would apply to shops and businesses in Bengaluru as well as 10 other municipal corporation areas.
