What is a spinal cord injury?
Experts say spinal cord injury, which involves damage to any part of the spinal cord damage to the nerves at the end of the spinal cordWhich is known as Cauda Equina. Your spine sends and receives signals between the brain and the rest of the body.
If a spinal cord injury occurs, there can often be permanent changes in strength, feeling, and other body functions below the injury site. People who have suffered a spinal cord injury may also experience mental, emotional, and social side effects.
Are spinal cord injuries dangerous?,
According to doctors, the spinal cord can control your arms or legs and after an injury, movement depends on two factors: one, where on the spinal cord the injury occurs, and second, how severe the injury is.
If the lowest part of the spinal cord is not damaged after an injury, it is called the neurological level of the injury. The “completeness” of the injury refers to how much feeling, known as sensation, is lost. Completeness is classified as:
Complete
If all feeling and ability to control movement is lost below the spinal cord injury, the injury is said to be complete.
incomplete
If some feeling and control of movement remains below the affected area, the injury is said to be incomplete. There are varying degrees of incomplete injury.
Experts say the loss of sensation and control over movement is known as paralysis, which can either be permanent or may recover over some time.
Signs and symptoms of spinal cord injury
According to experts, there are a series of tests that can help you determine the neurological level and completeness of your injury. Spinal cord injury can cause the following symptoms:
- loss of mobility
- Decrease or change in sensation, including changes in the ability to feel heat, cold, and touch
- loss of bowel or bladder control
- exaggerated reflex movements or convulsions
- Changes in sexual function, sexual sensitivity, and fertility
- Pain or a sharp pricking sensation caused by damage to nerve fibers in the spinal cord.
- having trouble breathing or coughing
When should you see a doctor?
If you or someone around you has a spinal cord injury, be sure to seek immediate medical evaluation. Until proven otherwise, it is safest to assume that the person has a spinal cord injury. This is important because:
- Severe spinal cord injury is not always immediately apparent.
- Numbness or paralysis may happen quickly or come on gradually
- The time between injury and healing can be important
If you suspect someone has a serious spinal cord injury, be sure to:
- Do not move the injured person as this may cause permanent paralysis
- Call for medical help immediately
- keep the person still
- Place heavy towels on either side of the neck and prevent movement
- Provide basic first aid such as stopping bleeding and making the person comfortable without moving the head or neck
