Burnout vs. Stress: How to Identify and Address Each in the Workplace? experts tell
Stress and fatigue are different challenges in the workplace. Experts explain their differences, symptoms, and strategies to manage and prevent these conditions for optimal wellness.

“Stress is the body’s natural response to any situation, which resolves itself when the situation is controlled. It definitely affects both mental and physical health, causing anxiety, depression, headaches, extreme fatigue, etc. But when stress lasts for a long time, it leads to a chronic condition called burnout, which is not cured even by a break. but has a deep impact,” Amish Dhingra, says ICF- PCC Certified Life Coach, and Co-Founder of Cocoweave Coaching International, Delhi.

If you’re stressed, he says, engage in some form of regular activity like walking, jogging, etc. for at least 30 minutes a day. “Also, mindfulness meditation is also very helpful in relieving stress. It is one of the best ways to reduce stress. After this, it is important to identify the stress factors like urgent deadlines, poor time management etc. and talk to the company manager about this. Want to talk about the relationship.” Dhingra says, workplace stress can also be reduced by managing time adequately and dividing long tasks into smaller tasks.
Addressing burnout in the workplace
Burnout is something more serious and requires the right approach if you notice any warning signs like resentment, demotivation, etc. “If necessary, taking breaks and planning vacations can be quite helpful. If at any time you feel that you are suffering from burnout, try delegating your tasks to other employees and seek professional help if necessary. Always remember to keep yourself on top of any situation,” says Dhingra, adding that a life coach also has a wonderful role to play if you are dealing with it. Get tired as soon as they enable you to establish a balance between work life and personal life and help in efficient management of tasks.
According to Dr Ashish Bansal, MD, consultant psychiatrist and co-founder of House of Aesthetics in New Delhi, stress and irritation are completely different experiences and a person requires different approaches to deal with them.

Facing any difficult situation at workplace causes temporary change in emotions which is called stress. This is generally reflected in some signs such as feeling overwhelmed and anxious before the deadline approaches, physical symptoms such as tachycardia, headache, feeling lethargic, etc. Dr. Bansal tells us that there are two types of stress – stress and distress.
“Eustress is good in nature and increases work productivity and improves focus. But when stress takes a negative turn and gives rise to excessive emotions along with anxiety, it is called distress. Prolonged stress leads to burnout. But stress at work can be managed easily with the right strategies. The most important thing is to divide your work into small tasks and try to complete them one by one. Know your limits anytime and anywhere Don’t overload yourself with work and practice the art of saying ‘no’ the right way. Take breaks in between working hours to increase productivity at work,” he explains.

Prolonged stress can lead to physical, mental and emotional exhaustion and is called burnout. If you feel isolated at work and have no motivation to get your work done, this is known as burnout and can also lead to insomnia. If you experience such symptoms, take a day or a few days off and manage your emotional state. Also in case of inability to function alone, go for work delegation and reduce your personal workload, do not be afraid to seek professional help from a therapist if necessary,” he concluded.
