When you think of brushing your teeth, you probably imagine fresh breath, cavity prevention, or a bright smile. But do you know that a simple toothbrush can help you fight cancer? Yes, you read that right. Recent studies and expert opinions are pointing to a stunning health truth: good oral hygiene can significantly reduce your risk of some types of cancer, including the mouth, neck, and even digestive system.
Oral cancer connection
“Poor oral hygiene does not just affect your gums and teeth – it can promote chronic inflammation in your body,” Dr. Rajesh Koppikar, advisor, dental surgery, Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Mumbai. “Chronic gum infections such as periodontitis can increase systemic inflammation, which is a known risk factor for cancer.”
In fact, a 2020 study published in cancer epidemiological, biomarker and prevention found that persons with severe periodontal disease doubled the possibility of developing certain cancer, including pancreatic and oral cancer.

While brushing your teeth cannot be the only way to prevent cancer, this is a habit that can help keep your health in examination.
