Both gel and silicone socks are expected to create a spa-like environment, promoting better hydration and healing, ultimately resulting in smoother, softer feet. Feels great, doesn’t it? But are these moisturizing socks as good as they claim to be? Dermatologists want you to know a few things!
Gel socks – a great addition to your winter routine
According to experts, moisturizing socks can be beneficial for feet during winter, but they are not a magic cure for cracked and dry feet.
Moisturizing and gel socks infused with hydrating ingredients like glycerin, shea butter or essential oils can really be a valuable addition to a foot care routine, especially during the winter. The insulating nature of these socks helps retain moisture, promoting better absorption of the active ingredients. If used consistently they can improve skin hydration, reduce dryness and even help with cracked heels,” Dr Pratiksha Jain, Associate Consultant Cosmetologist, Sparsh Hospital, Infantry Road, Bengaluru says.
“Think of them as sheet masks for your feet. These serum-soaked socks promise to give kids soft soles in just 20-30 minutes. But here’s the tea: They’re more like a band-aid than a cure. The star ingredient, usually butylene glycol, gives temporary hydration but does not heal deep cracks,” says Dr Geetika Srivastava, dermatologist and founder of Influenza Skin & Hair Clinic, Delhi.
We all love our sheet masks for an instant glow or as a pre-makeup ritual, right? However, the results are often quick but not long lasting. The same applies to moisturizing socks. Alternatively, you can indulge your feet in an elaborate pedicure session at home to give them some extra pampering.
What about silicone socks?
Silicone socks that you apply your own foot cream or balm on before wearing are also skin-approved. These can be worn for 15-20 minutes or even overnight.
“These beauties work through occlusion therapy. Apply your favorite foot cream and wear the socks overnight. It retains moisture and helps the cream to penetrate deeper. It’s like placing your feet in a spa cocoon while you take a nap. We dermatologists prefer this technique for stubborn dryness, says Dr. Srivastava.
For best results, use them with thick, emollient-rich foot creams containing ingredients like urea or hyaluronic acid. Prolonged exposure overnight helps repair cracked heels and very dry skin.

However, some precautions must be taken before using these silicone socks.
“Clean and dry silicone socks thoroughly before and after each use to prevent bacterial or fungal growth,” says Dr. Jain.
It is also very important to clean and dry your feet before using these socks.
Wearing them for too long or without proper foot hygiene can create a moist environment, which can promote fungal infections like athlete’s foot. If you have cuts, wounds or serious skin problems, consult a dermatologist before using these socks.
