The Canadian government has amended its visa policy and will no longer issue tourist visas with a validity of up to ten years. Also, the new guidelines will give immigration officers the discretion to decide whether to issue single-entry or multiple-entry visas. They will only set the appropriate validity period.
Previously, multiple-entry visas allowed the holder to enter Canada from any country. Also, its maximum validity was up to 10 years or until the expiry of the travel document or biometrics.
In a recent update, the Canadian Immigration Department said the guidance has been updated to indicate that multiple-entry visas issued for maximum validity are no longer considered standard documents. Canada’s move comes as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government faces low approval ratings and anger over housing shortages and the high cost of living.
“The guidance has been updated to indicate that multiple-entry visas issued for maximum validity are no longer considered standard documents. Officers can use their discretion in deciding whether to issue a single or multiple-entry visa and determine the validity period, the Canadian Immigration Department said in a recent update.
Immigration Minister Mark Miller, speaking to the media, said the migration flow had become “aggressive”. He further explained how he is conscious of the role he and the government may play in the perception, as surveys show, that there are too many immigrants in Canada.
