Chilai Kalan season has started in Kashmir
Chilai Kalan, the 40-day harsh winter period in Kashmir that begins in late December, evokes a sense of nostalgia for people who grew up in the valley. This season, synonymous with sub-zero temperatures and snowy mornings, holds memories of waking up in a pristine white blanket after nights of heavy snowfall.
This bone-chilling period, which started on a cold note, has seen the region assume its most captivating colours!
Srinagar shivered through its coldest night in 50 years, with the temperature plunging to -8.5 degrees Celsius, freezing parts of Dal Lake and turning water supply lines into popsicles. Although it warmed slightly the next day to -4.6 degrees Celsius, residents and tourists alike are feeling the pinch of the snow. The cold has not spared Pahalgam (-5.2 °C), Gulmarg (-6.0 °C), or even Kokernag (-3.7 °C) as the valley turns into a frosty paradise.

What is Chilai Kalan?,
Chillai Kalan is a 40-day long period in Kashmir, starting in late December and lasting until January 30, making it the harshest winter period in the region, with temperatures dropping and high chances of snowfall. Is. And if you thought the freeze would loosen its grip after that, think again! This is followed by 20 days of Chilai-Khurd (small cold) and 10 days of Chilai-Bachha (children’s cold).
