Cyclone Fengal: Avoid traveling to Tamil Nadu as the state braces for heavy rainfall
Travelers to Tamil Nadu should either postpone their plans or expect delays in flights and trains cyclone fangal There is a possibility of heavy rain in districts across the state. Earlier this week, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted that a deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal would intensify into a cyclonic storm, Cyclone Fengal, by Wednesday. Due to this system, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected at isolated places over districts like Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Pudukkottai. Cuddalore and Mayiladuthurai districts are likely to receive extremely heavy rainfall, prompting weather warnings and preparedness measures.
Since November 21, Tamil Nadu has received intense rainfall, causing severe flooding and waterlogging in areas such as Rajagopal Nagar, Pushpa Nagar and Postal Telegram Colony in Thoothukudi.
The rains have caused severe waterlogging in parts of Chennai, causing traffic jams on major roads like OMR Road. Disruption to air travel increased, with seven flights landing at Chennai airport delayed. Due to unsafe landing conditions, flights coming from cities like Madurai, Thiruvananthapuram, Coimbatore, Hyderabad and Kolkata had to circle over the city. More delays are expected but if the rain does not last long then cancellations can be avoided.
According to reports, IMD has issued a flash flood warning for the watersheds and low-lying areas of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal. To mitigate the possible impacts, NDRF teams have been deployed in Karaikkal, Tiruvarur, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai and Thanjavur. The IMD estimates that the depression will subside by November 30, reducing the red alert to yellow alert.
