For many of us, there was a solution for cleaning Detol or Savlon wounds. Whether it was a knee knee or a slight cut while playing on the playground, these antiseptic fluids were the first things that arrived for our parents or teachers. Even today, most Indian homes hold a bottle of antiseptic liquid in their priority kits, believing that it is necessary to heal quick wounds. But do you know that this is not the best way and it can be harmful?
Dermatologist Dr. According to Manzot Marwah, it can do more harm than the long -held confidence. Recently in a podcast shared by content creator Raj Shamani on YouTube (1 April), Dr. Marva revealed that applying Detol directly to wounds is really harmful.

Why you should not use Dettol on wounds

Dr. Marwa shared in podcast, “Don’t apply Dettol to wounds.” He explained that antiseptic liquid wounds such as Detol and Savlon can burn, possibly slow the healing process. “You should clean it with water,” he said, no dermatologist would recommend using Detols to cut or clean scrap.

His statement also surprised the hosts, like many Indians, grew up with the belief that antiseptic fluids were gold standard in wound care. Dr. Marwah further explained that while these products are usually seen in homes and sometimes in clinics, medical professionals do not actually use them to clean the wound. “Doctors and dermatologists usually use sondine instead,” he explained.

Better way to clean wounds

So, what should you do if you get a cut or scrap? Dr. According to Marwah, the answer is simple and surprisingly accessible.

Here is the right way to clean a wound:
  1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before touching the wound.
  2. Rinse the wound gently under clean flowing water to remove dirt, debris and bacteria.
  3. Avoid using rigid antiseptics such as Detol or Savlon, as they can disturb the skin and delay treatment.
  4. If necessary, you can use a light soap around the area – but not inside the deep wounds.
  5. Dry the wound with a clean towel or sterile mist.
  6. Apply an topical antibiotic such as a sondine or consult a doctor for a suitable option.
  7. Cover with a sterile bandage, especially if the wound is at risk of getting dirty.
  8. Change daily dressing or if it becomes wet or dirty.

A study of their effects on cytotoxicity of antiseptics and published wounds in the wound drug found in a study that many commonly used antiseptics – which include chloroxylenol (active ingredients) – are important for healing, to healing the skin cells to be toxic for keratinocytes and fibroblasts. It is clear that among many first aid methods we have grown up with the need to grow up. Just because something is commonly used does not mean that it is the best or safest option.
