Why you should not use Dettol on wounds
Dr. Marwa shared in podcast, “Don’t apply Dettol to wounds.” He explained that antiseptic liquid wounds such as Detol and Savlon can burn, possibly slow the healing process. “You should clean it with water,” he said, no dermatologist would recommend using Detols to cut or clean scrap.
Better way to clean wounds
So, what should you do if you get a cut or scrap? Dr. According to Marwah, the answer is simple and surprisingly accessible.
- Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before touching the wound.
- Rinse the wound gently under clean flowing water to remove dirt, debris and bacteria.
- Avoid using rigid antiseptics such as Detol or Savlon, as they can disturb the skin and delay treatment.
- If necessary, you can use a light soap around the area – but not inside the deep wounds.
- Dry the wound with a clean towel or sterile mist.
- Apply an topical antibiotic such as a sondine or consult a doctor for a suitable option.
- Cover with a sterile bandage, especially if the wound is at risk of getting dirty.
- Change daily dressing or if it becomes wet or dirty.
A study of their effects on cytotoxicity of antiseptics and published wounds in the wound drug found in a study that many commonly used antiseptics – which include chloroxylenol (active ingredients) – are important for healing, to healing the skin cells to be toxic for keratinocytes and fibroblasts. It is clear that among many first aid methods we have grown up with the need to grow up. Just because something is commonly used does not mean that it is the best or safest option.
