āSo, I went and got my back checked, realized there was something wrong with my spine, and treated it for about three months. My back got better, but I still couldnāt put weight on my leg. Then I started limping and that too in a very strange way: I would lift my leg and take it out and put it back in (while walking). Tanaaz said that despite undergoing numerous tests and treatments, her symptoms persisted and soon affected her ankles, knees and back. I always took painkillers. I thought it was a cruel joke that someone was playing on me. I didnāt even want to live anymore.ā
What is avascular necrosis?
According to doctors, avascular necrosis occurs when something blocks the blood flow to your bone tissue and without it, you start breaking down and eventually collapse. Statistics say that around 150,000 people worldwide develop avascular necrosis every year and the condition affects all ages and ages, however, most commonly, it occurs mostly in people in their 30s and 40s.
Avascular necrosis affects the bone tissue in any joint but commonly targets your hip. Other joints that can develop avascular necrosis include:

- knees
- upper arm (humerus) and shoulder
