A new milestone has been achieved by doctors as they successfully restored the vision of a premature baby following bilateral surgery. cataract surgery At Netradhama Super Specialty Eye Hospital, Bengaluru. This complex procedure was performed on the 31-week-old infant by Dr. Shree Ganesh, a renowned ophthalmologist and president of Nethradhama. The baby, born prematurely at just 31 weeks and weighing 1.05 kg, was diagnosed with bilateral mature congenital cataracts, a rare condition that severely impairs vision due to clouding of the lens of the eye. Extensive screening and diagnostic tests, including TORCH titer test and B-scan imaging, were conducted to confirm the diagnosis and rule out complications such as retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), a common problem in premature infants.
After thorough consultation, the infant underwent bilateral micro-incision cataract surgery. This included advanced procedures such as anterior vitrectomy (removing the gel from the front of the eye), posterior capsulorhexis (making a hole in the lens), and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation (placing an artificial lens). Ensuring accuracy and safety, the surgery was conducted at Jayanagar Center of Excellence in Nethradhama.
Despite the high risks associated with the baby’s premature condition and low birth weight, the surgical team led by Dr. Ganesh achieved a successful outcome. A dedicated team of anesthesiologists led by Dr. Suman Sri R provided expert care to ensure the safety of the child during the procedure. Advanced micro-incision techniques and foldable lenses were used to enhance recovery and reduce complications.
Expressing happiness over the successful surgery, Dr. Sri Ganesh said, “Restoring the vision of such a young patient is both challenging and rewarding. Our hospital is state-of-the-art Pediatric Eye Care Solutions And cutting-edge technology allows us to achieve better results even in the most complex cases. Their support and expertise gave us hope and courage during these difficult times. They have truly given our child the gift of sight, and we couldn’t be more grateful.
