Day -day sounds may seem harmless, but they can harm your child’s hearing, even you can realize it. From loud toys to frequent use of headphones, noise-inspired hearing loss in children is becoming more common.
Dr. By Anish Pillai, lead consultant- Neanatology and pediatrics, maternity hospitals, Kharghar, Navi Mumbai say, “Hearing loss among children has become rapid these days. Excessive contact for loud noise is one of the major contributors for hearing loss in children.”
Noisy-inspired hearing loss (NIHL) is different from age-related hearing loss that mostly occurs when loud noise damages the cells of delicate hair in the inner ear. Unfortunately, once these cells are damaged or cause damage, they do not grow back, resulting in frequent hearing loss. These days children are more likely to use headphones, play with noise toys, and may come in contact with loud atmosphere such as festive or crowded places, which can increase the risk of NIHL.
Dr. Anish has listed some common convicts of noise-inspired hearing loss in children.
- Loud toys: Children are more attracted to toys that cause loud noise such as toy sirens or musical instruments. This may not be good for their ears because they make voices that are above safe levels.
- Headphones and earbuds: Keeping the volume high shows through the headphone and then more likely to suffer from NIHL.
- Video games and virtual reality systems: Gaming console and VR headsets often include emergent sounds that children can crank for better gameplays, offering a significant hearing risk over time.
- Fireworks, sirens and concerts: Participating in concert, live event, watching fireworks, or emergency siren can suddenly expose the child with a sudden noise that can cause immediate damage to your small hearing.
- Home appliances and tools: Everyday items such as blender, vacuum cleaner, and hairdrices can be very loud for children, especially when used repeatedly or in a small place.
- Crowd and noise environment: Public places like train stations and sports stadiums can expose your children for loud voice.
- Traffic and construction site: Children living near highways, heavy traffic areas, construction sites or airports should be cautious as they are often exposed to high levels of high levels that can damage their hearing.
