Although 47th US President Skipping food and not paying much attention to your health is not the right way to lose weight. Losing weight during stress has become very common nowadays as we give priority to work more than our health. Some people lose weight when they are stressed, while some people gain weight when they are stressed. But how and why does this happen? We contacted some mental health experts who explained the possible reasons behind this.
“There is an interesting connection between stress, weight loss and mind-body dynamics. Donald Trump’s weight loss during his election campaign is a prime example of how stress can affect our physical health. When we are under pressure, our body reacts by releasing the stress hormone cortisol. Cortisol in the bloodstream causes changes in metabolism, appetite, and overall physical health. However, it is important to acknowledge that everyone’s response to stress is unique,” shares Shubhra S Khurana, psychologist and founder of mental health startup White Apples.
“Some may experience weight loss, while others may gain weight. There are also some other factors that begin to influence weight such as a person’s predisposition and genetic makeup, the person’s attitude towards competitive work settings, global market volatility, and the constant personal demands that he places on himself,” She explains further.
Dr Gorav Gupta, senior psychiatrist and CEO, Tulsi Healthcare, explains that “Some people experience weight loss due to stress due to changes in appetite, metabolism or energy levels. In such people, stress activates the “fight or flight” response, where the brain releases the hormone adrenaline, which momentarily reduces the desire to eat. Stress also increases metabolism and calories are burned faster. In others, stress triggers gastrointestinal disorders and anxiety, causing them to not feel the need to eat. As a result, their body burns more calories than before or even reduces calorie intake which ultimately results in weight loss over time.
While some people may lose weight due to stress, others are likely to gain weight. Dr. Geeta Shroff, Co-Founder, Lighthouse Counseling Center shares that “When a person’s body feels pressure due to stress, a certain hormone called cortisol may be released; This hormone stimulates hunger and appetite for high-calorie sugary foods, which are usually stored as fat around one’s belly. Additionally, stress causes disturbed sleep patterns, reduced energy levels and lack of motivation to exercise, leading to weight gain. As a result, people seeking relief from stress begin to gain weight through comfort foods or stop exercising because they are completely out of their routine.”
