The World Health Organization says that no level of alcohol is safe for our health. A 2018 study showed that regular drinkers who took a one-month break from alcohol showed improvement in three key areas:
- weight:Participants lost weight and improved insulin resistance, which affects feelings of hunger and satiety.
- blood pressure: Drinking alcohol can cause blood vessels to narrow, making existing high blood pressure worse.
- liver function: Limiting alcohol for a month can help reduce inflammation, thereby reducing the risk of developing fatty liver disease.
The research was led by Dr Richard de Visser, a psychologist at the University of Sussex, who found that Dry January has a number of long-term health benefits. 800 people participated in the Dry January study and the results were surprising.
Dr. de Visser said in a statement, “The simple act of taking a month off from alcohol helps people drink less in the long term. It also has immediate benefits: nine out of ten people save money, in ten “Seven sleep better and three out of five lose weight.”
