A study from Nottingham Trent University shows that regular physical exercise can reduce the severity of a hangover. Research conducted on 1,676 students found that vigorous activities like running helped reduce symptoms by controlling pain, improving sleep and reducing inflammation. However, researchers have revealed that drinking alcohol in moderation is the best method of prevention.

There are many home remedies when it comes to hangovers, but did you know that regular physical exercise can help you get rid of severe headaches caused by hangovers? A recent study showed that regular physical exercise can help reduce the severity of a hangover. Athley Redwood-Brown and Jane Wilson of Nottingham Trent University conducted a study where the research revealed the effect of exercise on hangover symptoms. About 1,676 undergraduate students who had experienced a hangover at least once in the past three months participated in the study.
The study included a questionnaire to understand the alcohol consumption patterns, physiological acidity levels, and frequency and severity of hangovers of these participants. They were also asked to do at least 30 minutes of physical activity per week.
Study findings:
The results showed that there is a clear relationship between alcohol consumption and the severity of a hangover. The findings showed that the more alcohol consumed, the worse the hangover. However, people who regularly perform vigorous physical activities like running have less intense hangover symptoms than others. This suggests that high levels of exercise may play a role in reducing hangovers.
How does exercise reduce hangover symptoms?
Pain Modulation: Hangovers often come with headaches and muscle aches. Exercise stimulates the release of endorphins, which act as natural pain relievers and can reduce sensations of discomfort.
Better sleep quality: Hangovers are usually associated with poor sleep. Regular exercise helps improve sleep patterns, leading to better rest and recovery after a night of drinking.
Improved metabolism: Exercise boosts the body’s metabolism, aiding more efficient processing of alcohol and potentially reducing the side effects of drinking.
Reduction in inflammation: Alcohol consumption can trigger an inflammatory response in the body. Exercise has anti-inflammatory benefits, which may help ease some of the physical discomforts associated with a hangover.
While exercise can reduce the severity of a hangover, studies show that it is not a cure. The study’s researchers emphasize that the best way to avoid a hangover is to drink in moderation or avoid alcohol altogether. Regular physical activity can reduce some symptoms, but it cannot completely prevent the negative effects of excessive alcohol consumption.
