From abdominal pain to spotting: You should know signs of untreated sexually transmitted infections
The UK’s Health Protection Agency has raised an alarm on a common sexually transmitted infection-after the increasing number of cases of drona-drug-resistant cases. Doctors say the infection – undergoing unprotected sexes – is rapidly resistant to antibiotics, fearing that it may soon be untreated. Read to know signals and symptoms.

Gonorrhea, a STI due to the bacterial nesaria gonorrhea – often spreads through vagina, oral or anal sex
Experts have raised an alarm on general sexually transmitted infections, which is concerned with the increasing number of drug resistant cases. The UK’s Health Protection Agency, or UKHSA, warned the infection, passed through unprotected sex, “was becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotics, which increases the apprehension that it could be unavailable.
According to doctors, gonorrhea – an STI that is caused by bacterial neseria gonorrhea – is often spread through vagina, oral or anal sex and can be treated with antibiotics. Overall, about 60,000 cases of Gonorrhea were diagnosed in the first nine months of 2024.
However, the UKHSA stated that concerns were more than a small number of cases that were not responding to saftrexone, an antibiotic was used as the first line of treatment for gonorrhea. For many patients with the condition, a dose of cefatrexone may not be effective if bacteria develop the ability to survive when exposed to antibiotic.
“If left untreated, it can cause serious problems such as pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility,” Dr. Katy Sink, Consultant Epidemiologist and head of STI section in UKHSA, The Sun reported. If they are infected with dirty STIs, not everyone will get symptoms.
What is gonorrhea?
Doctors say that gonorrhea does not cause symptoms, and you will not know that you have. If you are sexually active and using condoms or dental dams during sex can reduce your risk of infection. If you believe that you have gonorrhea, do not wait to seek treatment, as the untreated situation may give rise to long health complications.
Gonorrhea is the second most common STI due to bacteria – just behind chlamydia. There are about one lakh new gonorrhea infections every year in the United States. About half of these infections occur in people between 15 and 24 years of age.
Symptoms and symptoms of gonorrhea in women
At least 50 percent of women do not experience any symptoms, which makes it easier to pass the infection to your sexual partners. And so, doctors recommend testing for gonorrhea if you are sexually active or if you believe that you have sex with someone who has gonorrhea. Some symptoms of the condition include:
- Abnormal vaginal discharge
- Pain in your lower abdomen or pelvis
- Pain during sexual intercourse
- Pain when you urinate
- Bleeding
Symptoms of gonorrhea in men
Men are more likely to experience symptoms and some signs of infection, including after several weeks, including:
- White, yellow or green discharge from your penis
- Severe pain
- Castric and swelling pain
Infections may not have symptoms of gonorrhea for several weeks after entering your body. Your immune system cannot identify it as an infection immediately. On average, most people experience symptoms within 10–12 days.
Ways to stop gonorrhea
The only way to stop gonorrhea is to avoid sex. For many people, the best way to reduce the risk of contracting and spreading gonorrhea is always to use condoms or dental dams during sex. Other methods to stop STI include:
- Do not have sex with someone who has an active infection
- Do not have sex with someone who has symptoms of gonorrhea
- Limit sexual partners and openly communicate about sexual activities.
- Do tests for gonorrhea and whether your partners have also been tested.
The disease control and prevention center (CDC) recommends that all women who are sexually active and test each year for gonorrhea under 25 years of age. Regardless of sex, you may need to test annually if you consider high risk to the contract of gonorrhea.
