Ways to check the purity of red chili powder At home
Red chilli is one of the most commonly used spices around the world. In their powdered form, they are most commonly added to curries to add flavor and rich color. However, there are some simple steps you can take at home to know whether the spice you are using is safe or not.
water test
Experts say that to make the color of the spice appear bright red, it is mostly mixed with brick powder, salt and talcum powder. However, an easy way to detect them is to mix one teaspoon of chili powder in a glass of plain water.
If it is artificial the water will change its color. It may be reddish-brown in color due to the presence of brick powder. Pure red chili powder does not actually dissolve in water. Also, if you find any white residue at the bottom of the glass that feels greasy, it may indicate the presence of soapstone.
Acid test
Take a small amount of chili powder and mix it with hydrochloric acid or lemon juice and water. If you see bubbles, this will indicate the presence of chalk powder or washing soda.
palm test
You can gently rub a small amount of chili powder on your palm. If it leaves a bright red stain, it may be artificially colored. Experts say pure chili powder leaves a light, natural stain.
taste and smell test
Pure chili powder will have a natural, pungent aroma and consistent spicy flavor. Adulterated powder may taste bland or gritty due to added fillers.
