For the longest time, Gallops restaurants have held a deep place in the hearts and minds of generations of Mumbaikars. Ask the city’s foodies for a list of the most iconic establishments and Gallup’s will likely make the top 10. Ask those who dine there frequently, and they will tell you about many fond memories from the restaurant’s 38 years of existence. Besides the merits of its food, service and anecdotes, there is also its location. The vast green cover of the Mahalaxmi Racecourse makes for a beautiful backdrop to dine at this restaurant. It cannot be denied that Gallops is a cultural landmark. So what happens when she decides to do a revival after 26 years?

The current custodians of its legacy – chefs Yajush Malik, Jasmine Singh and Mikhail Singh – explain what they set out to do: “Our goal was to introduce new features that we were initially unable to adopt and to honor the rich history. while creating a beautiful blend that has made Gallup’s an iconic culinary destination.” The decor and menu have been enhanced with new features. The old wooden floors have been replaced with rich walnut floors. Old polish has been removed from wooden trusses to expose the beauty of the wood beneath. Custom-made candlelight chandeliers and wall sconces really brighten the space.

The restaurant also features an equestrian-themed memorabilia wall and a sleek new bar area. The latter features a breathtaking centerpiece in the form of “The Red Dancers”, an artwork by renowned Dutch artist Peter Gentenaar. “Reshaping Gallops was definitely a challenge as it was not only a prerequisite but a difficult decision to make moving forward at the beginning. We needed to preserve its authentic roots while also enhancing its ambiance and dining experience. There was a fine line to be walked between introducing new, modern features,” the partners say.

Our meal included newly introduced dishes as well as typical Gallops dishes that have been retained on the menu. “We introduced 42 delicious dishes that showcase a modern twist on our traditional favourites, ensuring they resonate with contemporary food trends. The main consideration when crafting the new offerings was to attract new and young visitors -To stay true to our long-standing patrons.” Says Chef Yajush. We started our meal deliciously paya brothfollowed by a heartfelt Smoked Salmon and Nicoise SaladWe’ve already started noticing the generous portions, thoughtful service and warmth of the atmosphere. Every appetizer we tried was an instant hit: insanely delicious Goan Grilled Prawnsmelt in mouth Dori Kebab (A Gallops Must Try), Occultist Chicken Jafrani Tikka and impressively crisp sweet and sourwas different from everyone Chicken Liver Pate (served with Melba toast, cucumber, rum raisins and hazelnuts), which has been upgraded to include more toppings. The obvious sophistication of its flavor and presentation seemed to capture the essence of Gallops on a plate.

There are also new additions to the bar menu. We started with fruit sips Strawberry Aperol Haroni (strawberry syrup, Aperol, Campari, vodka) and a perfect french 75But the cocktail that impressed us the most was garden thiefA blend of bourbon whiskey, apple juice, cinnamon and bitters. The strength of the whiskey, balanced with the crisp sweetness of the apple, and finished with spice at the end, made for a real treat.

The mains continued to delight with their strong flavors. We loved the juiciness of this slow-cooked dish Braised Lamb Shanksassured novelty of Saag Burrata and comfortable silky dab chingri (Served in a real coconut). Forget plain tandoori roti and butter naan – we enjoyed Indian main dishes with delicious red naan, missi roti and Malabari Paratha which elevated our experience. As many Gallups regulars will tell you, skipping dessert is almost unheard of here. If you want to try one of the new additions, select this Baileys Caramel Clouds – A blend of all-time favorite notes of cocoa, whiskey, salted caramel and almond. If you want one of the classics, you can’t go wrong with this Baked AlaskaWe demolished it in minutes despite several recipes first!

The people at the helm of Gallops are quick to reassure their loyal patrons that they have retained most aspects of the original attraction. Although my dining companion and I were not in this category of patrons, the promise enticed us. At Gallops 2.0’s preview meal, we were in the minority who thoroughly enjoyed its renowned experience with fresh eyes (and palettes). So what did first-time visitors know? Answer: There are a few reasons why other patrons choose to return. And thanks to the correction, there may be more reasons to add to that list.

Where: Gate no. 1, Inside Mahalaxmi Racecourse, Via, Keshavrao Khade Marg, Royal Western India Turf Club, Mahalaxmi, Mumbai.
