Gauri Khan’s luxury restaurant Tori, which was launched in 2024, was recently on fire. The Region? YouTuber Sarthak Sachdeva alleged that the restaurant served ā€œfakeā€ cheese. On 15 April, the Content Creator posted a video on Instagram, where she visited several celebrity-owned restaurants in Mumbai, including Shilpa Shetty’s Bastian, Bobby Deol’s elsewhere and Gauri’s Tori. His mission was to test whether the service of cheese at these places was authentic.

Now-viral video showed the charter to conduct an iodine tincture test on a piece of cheese to detect the presence of starch, which would indicate adulteration. While Bastian and some place passed the exam, it was Tori who gave rise to controversy. The first two restaurants turned the cheese to blue – there is no starch – while the cheese turned black in contact with iodine in zucchini.

Tori replied in a statement: ā€œWe are completely surprised at the news being served ā€˜fake cheese’ in Tori. Iodine tests show the presence of starch, not the authenticity of cheese. These days, many reports of fake cheese are being served in the markets and food establishments are coming to our attention. If you want to identify fake cheese, then there are some other ways you can use.

How to identify fake cheese:

1. Frames and texture: Authentic cheese has a milky odor, which is infected with a fresh aroma and crumbly texture. Tear a small piece of cheese and press it between your fingers. If it feels extra smooth and rubber, it is likely that it is fake.

Before buying cheese from grocery stores, always check quality certificates like FSSAI mark.

3. Heating Test: For this, heat a small piece of cheese in a dry pan. If it becomes a little brown and starts to dislodge, be convinced that the cheese is real. Meanwhile, fake cheese will melt excess water and leave.

4. Arhar Dal Test: For this test you need to boil the cheese in water, let it cool down and then sprinkle some pigeonpea powder on it. Wait for 10 minutes. If you see that the cheese turns into light red color, it means that the cheese is adulterated.
