The increasing number of General Z is facing fear of making or receiving phone calls or receiving, known as telephobia. For a generation raised on immediate messages, emails and voice notes, the sound of the ringing phone can trigger anything but excitement. In fact, many genes are now accepted that they experience telephobia – a fear or anxiety associated with making or receiving a phone call.
Recently, content creator Uptin shared a reel on Instagram, where he explains how phone calls anxiety, or ‘telephobia’, has become a common issue for General Z. In his reel, he revealed that about 75 percent of General Z did not respond to the phone call and many experiences do real difficulty when they have to make one.
This phobia is beginning to cause real -life challenges. From schedule of dentist’s appointments to dealing with job interview calls, avoiding phone conversations has become a hindrance.
“Phone interviews, in particular, are scared to students,” he said. “They never really got a chance to practice how to speak on the phone, especially in professional scenarios.” As a result, career consultants and teachers are taking steps to help.
In his reel, he explains that to overcome this fear, workshops and training sessions are being organized and virtually. The purpose of these sessions is to provide equipment and practice to General Z which they need to make a phone call confidently. Students respond to everyday tasks such as booking appointments or interviews, often use scripts and note cards.
A career advisory shares the importance of preparation, he shares. “Choose a cool place, keep a note card with the key talk points and use deep breathing techniques to dispose of your nerves before dialing.” He encourages students to re -nominate his mindset: “You are in charge of phone calls. If it’s something you don’t want, you have every right to eliminate it. It gives you strength.”
Experts say that the concern of the phone often begins with fear of unknown – what is at the other end, what they will say, and pressure to respond immediately.
